13-Jun-2016 09:06:40 PM

June 13 (Reuters) – The brunt of a serious cold front over the weekend missed Brazil’s coffee and cane belts in large part, and minimum temperatures are forecast to slowly rise through the week, meteorologist Celso Oliveira at local forecaster Somar said on Monday

  • A few isolated cases of frost may have damaged some coffee trees near Pocos de Caldas and Sao Sebastiao de Paraiso regions of South Minas and along the border of Parana and Sao Paulo
  • The elevated region of Pocos de Caldas, in Minas Gerais, registered a low of -1.7 Celsius early Monday morning but other regions of the coffee belt in South Minas and Parana remained above 1 degree Celsius – Somar
  • Temperatures over Brazil’s southern coffee, sugar cane and corn areas are expected to slowly warm through the week with no rains seen interrupting harvest in the coffee region -Somar
  • Two areas of cane in Mato Grosso do Sul may have suffered damage due to low temperatures over weekend – Somar
  • Cane is more vulnerable to damage from low temperatures than other crops; temperatures in regions fell to 0.5 degrees Celsius – Somar
  • Corn areas in Parana state suffered from several mornings of below freezing temperatures since last week but only a portion of the crop is vulnerable to cold – Somar
